Set within a historical mansion area, this introspective sanctuary of senses honors traditional courtyard home architecture from a residence once owned by a cousin of the Qing dynasty's last emperor, preserving the original structure while blending modern elements that reflect a deep respect for craftsmanship and materials including large teak structures inspired by classic step-beds and a summer temporary pavilion featuring a retractable structure draped in waterproof canvas and crimson xiangyunsha tea silk.

Architect Kengo Kuma, in collaboration with Uchino Sheet Metal and Okaniwa Construction, designed the Wakuni Shoten café in Higashimurayama City, Tokyo, set to open on January 19, 2024.

Set in a rejuvenated 52-year-old building in the Aoba Shopping District, the café's exterior uses 700 patinated bronze plates from the roof of Hayatani Shrine, interior brass work and furniture by local craftsmen, specialty coffee from Kinoshita Shoten, and chairs designed by Kuma made from repurposed seats of the former National Stadium.
